PGLU PRESERVES LA UNION HISTORY THROUGH SARIRIT QUIZ

Student representatives from 20 elementary school districts, 23 high school clusters and 12 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation offices across the Province of La Union showcased their wits on local and national history during the SARIRIT: La Union History Quiz held through hybrid events on August 26 – 27, 2021.

With questions lifted from the book “La Union: The Making of a Province 1850-1921” written by local historian Dr. Adriel Obar Meimban, the quiz competition is one of the major activities of the Ayat Festival 2021 with the theme: AGASEM! (Agas ken Isem): Iloko Para ti Naan-andur ken Natibtibker a La Union.” Conducted by the Provincial Government of La Union through the La Union Provincial Tourism Office – Culture and Arts Section, the activity advocates consciousness of the province on its local history and raises appreciation of the Iloko language. Final Round questions were also translated in Iloko.

Besting other participants, hailed winners of Elementary Students Category were Lara Janelle Mendoza of Luna II District - 1st place, Wheillysa Ilithyia Dotong of Tubao District - 2nd place, Jerianna Monique Cayetano of San Fernando City Division - 3rd place, Hannah Junessa Mae Merrera of Caba District - 4th place, and Ezekiel Yazueh Francisco of Naguilian District - 5th place. Fraenchezqa Reida Mico of Bangar Cluster topped the Secondary Students Category with Charity Lavigne Opinaldo of Balaoan Cluster, Sage Margareth Abando of Bauang South Cluster, Jan Rick Gallardo of Santo Tomas Cluster, and Janaree Quiñones of Naguilian Cluster completing the top 5 winners.

For the SK Federation Category, Jayson Borja of Tubao SK Federation was declared as 1st place while Oliver Niño Gundran of Agoo, Flora Leigh Saranilla of Balaoan, Marie Grace Rivera of Santo Tomas and William Jay Quiñones of Caba were declared as second to fifth placers, respectively. The winners will receive cash prizes and certificates of recognition.

SARIRIT is a component of the project “Kasanayan sa Kasaysayan” which encompasses history book distribution, and integration of local history to basic and tertiary education curriculum and programs. While the elimination rounds were conducted online, the final rounds were conducted face to face with the strict observance of the minimum health standards.
