PGLU CONDUCTS CONSULTATIVE DIALOGUE ON LOCAL HISTORY IN EDUCATION

La Union Provincial Tourism Officer-in-Charge Arthur S. Cortez, Jr. explains the importance of the consultation dialogue with education stakeholders which focuses on the access to knowing and enjoying the history of La Union during his opening message on April 21, 2021 via video conferencing. The consultation was attended by education stakeholders from the Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) together with Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) Committee Chairperson on Education and Culture Hon. Nancy Corazon M. Bacurnay, SP Committee Chairperson on Youth and Sports Development Hon. Alyssa Kristine B. Sibuma, and Provincial Librarian Marissa D. Acosta.
With the aim to identify priority interventions, validate plans and explore future cooperation among key stakeholders, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the La Union Provincial Tourism Office (LUPTO) – Culture and Arts Section conducted a consultative dialogue on local history with partner agencies in education on April 21, 2021 via video conferencing.
The consultation was attended by education stakeholders from the Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) together with Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) Committee Chairperson on Education and Culture Hon. Nancy Corazon M. Bacurnay, SP Committee Chairperson on Youth and Sports Development Hon. Alyssa Kristine B. Sibuma, and Provincial Librarian Marissa D. Acosta.
Board Member Bacurnay underscored the importance of the stakeholders’ inputs in the moving forward initiatives of PGLU in terms of culture, education and history. Board Member Sibuma likewise assured the strong support and contribution of SK Federated officials of La Union to the attainment of the project’s goals.
LUPTO Officer-in-Charge Arthur S. Cortez, Jr. stressed the commitment of PGLU in maintaining the province’s cultural and heritage strengths to provide an accessible link between the past, the present and the future. “Daytoy a programa iti Gobierno Provincial ti La Union ket mangted kadatayo amin iti gundaway nga agkaykaysa iti naisangayan a panagtaliaw iti napintas a historia tayo kas maysa a probinsia,” he said.
Meanwhile, Senior Culture and Arts Officer Jeddhan P. Rosario explained the project cycle and the importance of the feedback report of the partner agencies. “We expect a fruitful discussion and sharing of ideas and initiatives as we collectively create consciousness of respect and love for the legacies of cultural history of La Union,” he stated.
Mr. Rosario informed the education stakeholders on the distribution of the latest edition of “La Union: The Making of a Province 1850-1921” history book in May 2021. He also shared about PGLU’s vision to integrate La Union local history into the curriculum of basic and tertiary education.
The orientation on the conduct of the SARIRIT: Online La Union History Quiz Show was also discussed during the meeting. This LUPTO initiative as a component activity under the Kasanayan sa Kasaysayan will be launched by August as PGLU’s celebration of the National History Month which will be participated in by elementary and secondary education students, Sangguniang Kabataan Federation officers representing the component local government units, and PGLU employees.
As concluding part of the discussion, education stakeholders shared their programs, projects, activities and mandates in connection with inculcating and integrating La Union local history in curricula wherein recommendations were gathered. The Honorable Board Members commit to strongly support the same in terms of legislation.
PGLU pledges to continue working hand in hand with the DepEd and CHEd along with other diverse stakeholders and sectors in appreciating and highlighting that indeed “may saysay sa Kasaysayan” as well as in preserving and promoting cultural and historical heritage in building a Stronger La Union – a province worth living in.
