La Union Advances Tech-Voc Skills in 171st Anniversary

In celebration of the 171st La Union Foundation Anniversary, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) partnered with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Association of Technical Vocational Institution in La Union to conduct the 12th Provincial Skills Olympics on February 26, 2021.

The main events were conducted at TESDA- Regional Office Compound, Catbangen, San Fernando City, La Union with other contest venues at TESDA- Regional Training Center; Corazon Ortega Skills Training Center for Women; STI College La Union; and RJ Ilocandia Technical and Vocational School.

The areas of competition in the event, where chosen representatives of Technical Vocational Institutions competed, were Welding Technology; Cooking; Restaurant Service; Web Design; Electrical Installation Technology; and Automotive.

Adjudged champions in the different competitions were Ariel Sidharth Keran S. Bucsit of RJ Ilocandia for Welding Technology; Jemuel Artlee A. Nerona of STI College San Fernando City for Cooking; John Ryan A. Obra of La Union Colleges of Science and Technology for Restaurant Service; Camelle M. Claro of GESTAAC Inc. for Web Design; Efraem D. De Guzman, Jr. for Regional Training Center for Electrical Installation Technology; and Mark Luis C. Angel of RJ Ilocandia for Automotive.

Also part of the program were demonstrations of skills where Table Skirting; Cake Decoration; Barista; IMO Preparation; Rice Machinery Operation; Wheel Loader Operation; Care Giving; Bamboo Propagation; Wedge Grafting; Fermentation of Plant/Fruit Juice; Backhoe Operation; and Motorcycle Servicing were shown.

In his message, Gov. Francisco Emmanuel “Pacoy” R. Ortega III said, “…jumpstarting local economy through skill development is symbolic of our reinvigorated hope for a promising future. Therefore, let us work together in upholding technical education in the province to empower our people in becoming catalysts in building a stronger La Union, a province worth living in.”

The Provincial Skills Competition is conducted annually to showcase the competence and ability of Technical-Vocational students in the province in their respective fields. Winners of the contests will represent the province in regional, national and international competitions.

The PGLU and TESDA ensured that minimum health standards were strictly observed during the competition.
