Breastfeeding is the most cost effective yet offers short and long term health benefits for both mother and baby. Babies’ benefits from breastfeeding include lowered risk for conditions such as allergies, asthma, obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and sudden Infant Death Syndrome while mothers’ benefits include mother’s healing after childbirth trauma and lowered risk of diseases such as Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer and Type 2 Diabetes.
Promotion of breastfeeding in time of pandemic is advised as babies can’t get CoViD-19 from breast milk. However, it is important to practice Infection and Prevention Control measures to ensure safe breastfeeding including wearing of mask when breastfeeding; sanitizing / handwashing before breastfeeding; and keeping distance from others when breastfeeding.
