EPILEPSY AWARENESS. In celebration of the National Epilepsy Awareness Week, Dr. Ardilyn Nuval of Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) lectures at the out-patient department, BDH, Bacnotan, La Union on September 6, 2019 to make other people aware of this most common childhood brain disorder.

To make people aware about Epilepsy, Dr. Ardilyn Nuval of Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) conducted a lecture at the out-patient department on September 6, 2019 in celebration of the National Epilepsy Awareness Week.

Around 30 hospital goers attended the lecture. Dr. Nuval discussed that epilepsy is the most common childhood brain disorder. It is caused by severe head injury, difficulties at birth, and infection. Loss of consciousness and disturbances of movement are some of the signs and symptoms.

Dr. Nuval told her audience to discard the myth of placing a spoon inside the mouth of a person having seizures. She explained that inserting an object into the mouth during seizures can cause mouth lacerations, dental fractures, and suffocation because the patient may stop breathing, bite his tongue, and clamp his jaw.

Instead, she advised the audience to: cushion the patient’s head with a pillow; loosen his clothing around the neck; remove harmful objects around him; and turn him to his side to prevent suffocation and allow drainage of saliva. She advised to bring the patient immediately to the hospital in case the seizures last for five minutes or more; or if the patient has been injured.
