Head of Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Team Dr. Michelle D. Arellano and Emergency Room Nurse Coordinator Benedict B. Banayat of the Naguilian District Hospital (NDH) discuss on the step-by-step approach in handling vehicular accidents, during a lecture held on July 19, 2019, at the NDH Out-Patient Department, Naguilian, La Union.

Clients at the Naguilian District Hospital learned on how they could extend help during road accidents, as NDH personnel conducted a lecture on July 19, 2019, at the NDH outpatient department (OPD), Naguilian, La Union.

Dr. Michelle D. Arellano, Head of Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Team, and Mr. Benedict B. Banayat, Emergency Room Nurse Coordinator, discussed on the step-by-step approach in handling vehicular accidents.

The lecturers reveal that during road accidents, helpers should ensure their own safety to avoid additional casualties. When this is secured, helpers should immediately call emergency services.

Helpers should check the status of vehicle occupants by monitoring their breathing. They should be placed in a position where they are leaning forward or to one side to keep their airways open. When they sustained severe bleeding, this should be immediately controlled by applying dressing.

If a casualty has been hit by a vehicle or thrown from one and they are conscious in the road, they should be encouraged to keep still.

Helpers are also advised to talk to the casualty calmly as they can hear even if they are unconscious. If a casualty has been hit by a vehicle or thrown out and they are conscious in the road, they should be encouraged to keep still.

Dra. Arellano also encouraged the participants to save the emergency hotlines – NDH (072-609-1018), RHU (072-609-1144), PNP (072-609-1138), BFP (072-609-1243).
