PHO conducts Iwas-Dengue Caravan

Bagulin Mayor Hon. Ferdinand Tumbaga, spearheaded the distribution of insect repellents to daycare and elementary pupils on June 22, 2018. Said program is part of the Iwas Dengue Caravan in celebration of Dengue Awareness Month.

The Province of La Union led the observance of the Dengue Awareness Month with an Iwas-Dengue Caravan in Bagulin, La Union on June 20-22, 2018, with the theme “Kung Walang Lamok, Walang Dengue! Mag4S Kontra Dengue!”

Activities include lectures on dengue prevention, distribution of insect repellents, indoor residual spraying, clean-up drive and vector surveillance.

The lecture, which was given by Health Education and Promotions Officer II Ms. Sharon Fontanilla focuses on discussions about dengue; its vector of disease, mosquito bionomics; dengue signs and symptoms; disease management; and dengue prevention and control measures. This year, the theme focuses on the importance of eradicating the vector of disease which is mosquito by doing 4S . Which stands for Search and destroy all possible mosquito breeding sites; Self-protection by using insect repellents and wearing pants and long sleeve shirts; Seek early consultation; and Support or say yes to fogging or spraying when there is an impending outbreak. The lecture also emphasizes the importance of community participation in an Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue (ABKD) led by Barangay Officials.

Distribution of insect repellents from the Provincial Government of La Union was headed by Bagulin Mayor Hon. Ferdinand Tumbaga and Provincial Health Officer II Dr. Hector T. Beñas who represented Governor Francisco Emmanuel “Pacoy” R. Ortega III during the event. The beneficiaries were day-care and elementary pupils of Bagulin.

Clean-up drive and vector surveillance was also conducted in Barangay Suyo and Barangay Tagudtud to remove mosquito breeding sites.

Another activity conducted was the residual spraying of Bagulin Central School, Suyo National High School, Tagudtud Elementary School and Tagudtud National High School to safeguard school children, parents and school employees from mosquitoes.

With the onset of the rainy season, the number of dengue cases is expected to rise. Dengue prevention and control activities are now being conducted in the different barangays in the entire province to combat this disease. Dengue is a dreaded disease and it can affect anyone regardless of age, gender and social status. The entire community is expected to work together to fight this insect by doing the 4S.
