La Union Halo-Halo Man Qualifies in Northern Luzon Search for the Best Filipino Home Cooked Food

Chairperson on Special Projects of Multi Sector Governance Council Mr. Xavier Mercado with his team participated in the Buhay Carinderia 2018 as La Union Representative and made it in the pre-qualifying round of the Search for the Best Filipino Home Cooked Food 2018 on June 4, 2018 at Mel Sol's Inn and Resort, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

The event is one of the sponsored projects of the Department of Tourism together with Tourism Promotions Board Philippines and MarlindBert International.

The event was participated in by various home cooks and food chefs representing their respective food culture and provinces in the region. Mr. Mercado is the grand slam champion in North Luzon Qualifying Round with his winning dishes, the "Sinampalukang Lames Sa Buko" as the Best in Sinigang (Champion); "Adobong Pato sa Gata" as Best in Adobo (Champion); "Pancit en Grande" as Best in Pancit (Champion); “Launionganisa" as Best in Longganisa (Champion); and "Igadobas ti Bauang" hailed as the Chef's Cook-Off Champion.

Mr. Merado, who is known for his expertise in creative cooking, is the owner of the Halo-Halo De Iloko, an ancestral house turned into a restaurant which features local Ilocano dishes such as the “Halo-Halo sa Buko” and also considered a tourist destination for food enthusiasts in the province.

Buhay Carinderia was known as “Carinderia Fiesta.” It was the first ever organized Carinderia Showcase in the country and was first launched on 2010. It is a gathering of carinderia owners, product/ food suppliers, entrepreneurs, professionals, and students, which provides a field of networking and serves as a forum to socialize with fellow food enthusiasts. Now it’s called “Buhay Carinderia Redefined,” and it aims to level up the quality of foods that is being served in their respective carinderias yet maintain the unique flavors of Filipino culture and customs.
