Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Director for North Luzon Cluster, Jesusa Joyce Cirunay, shared the mandates and programs of FDA to the Provincial Health Officer, Chiefs of Hospital of the five District Hospitals, Chief Executive Officer of La Union Medical Center and staffs of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist during a meeting on May 28, 2018 at the Diego Silang Hall, Provincial Capitol Building, City of San Fernando, La Union.
The meeting came about after Dir. Cirunay wrote to Gov. Francisco Emmanuel "Pacoy" R. Ortega III to request for an appointment to present and discuss the mandates and programs of FDA to strengthen collaboration on public health protection. She mentioned that FDA is mandated to ensure that food products comply with food safety standards.
La Union is one of the promising tourist destinations in the country and caters to a number of tourists daily bringing home “pasalubong” like pre-packaged food items. This has prompted FDA to seek support from the Provincial Government of La Union in cascading their programs to the processors of food and food products, who are required to get from FDA a license to operate and register their product to the agency. She stated that FDA can provide Food Safety Training to the processors, a requirement for a license to operate. She seeks for strengthened collaboration with other regulatory bodies in the LGU to ensure implementation of standards to guarantee that food items are safe and of good quality.
FDA also regulates other products such as cosmetics, drugs, medical devices and household urban hazardous substances with an ultimate goal of protecting the health of the public.
