“….The time to act is now,” These are the words of Dr. Hector T. Beñas, Provincial Health Officer II, as he welcomes participants from the 20 Local Government Units (LGUs) of La Union to the Local Sustainable Sanitation Planning (LSSP) Workshop held on April 23-25, 2018 at the Sea and Sky Hotel and Restaurant, City of San Fernando, La Union.

He said that with the continuous generation of wastes, eventually there will come a time that we will be ‘poisons’ to our environment if we do not manage these wastes effectively. He calls for collective efforts to act now on the sanitation issues and challenges in the Province to avoid problems similar to Boracay.

The LSSP Workshop aims to help LGUs come up with their local plans on sanitation and water with the assistance of the resource speakers from the Department of Health Regional Office I (DOH RO-I) and Basic Needs Services, Inc. – Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BNS-BORDA). Participants were Municipal Health Officers, Planning Officers and Sanitation Inspectors.

The outputs of the planning workshop are the Municipal and City LSS Plans which will be consolidated to come up with the Provincial LSS Plan.

Preparing the LSS Plan and implementing it is a pro-active way to ensure sustainable development of the province and has a big impact on the attainment of the vision of the Province of La Union to be the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025.
