Monsterpot is owned and operated by 24-year-old agripreneur Astley Anaviso, who discovered carnivorous plants in 2019 after seeing them for sale in a local store. That moment sparked a deep interest that eventually grew into a full nursery in Brgy. Maragayap, Bacnotan. Now, it is considered one of the most educational and unusual La Union tourist spots.

Anaviso currently cultivates four types of carnivorous plants: Venus flytraps, butterworts, sundews, and pitcher plants

What Are Carnivorous Plants?

Carnivorous plants are fascinating species that trap and digest insects to obtain essential nutrients. As Anaviso explains, they come in two types. Active carnivorous plants move to trap their prey, while passive ones rely on sticky or pitfall mechanisms without movement.

Monsterpot gives visitors a rare chance to observe both types, which is an experience rarely found even in larger botanical gardens, making this an exceptional La Union tourist spot for families, students, and plant hobbyists.

Tours, Rates, and What to Expect

Visitors can buy carnivorous plants ranging from ₱200 to ₱5,000. Monsterpot also offers educational tours, where guests learn about each plant’s unique trapping method. These tours aim to build appreciation for these fascinating species and their ecological role.

For individuals interested in tours, they can coordinate through their Facebook page, Instagram, or their local government unit.

And soon, Monsterpot plans to open a café beside the nursery, so guests can relax and grab a bite after their tour, making the visit even more memorable.
