To enhance the data-gathering capabilities of accommodation establishments (AEs) in Pugo, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), through the La Union Provincial Tourism Office (LUPTO), conducted a retooling orientation on Basic Tourism Statistics Reporting for the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Pugo at the Pugo Municipal Hall.

The program aimed to upskill the capacity of LGU personnel and AE representatives to accurately collect, compile, and submit tourism statistics. The session served as a refresher on standard reporting protocols and compliance requirements, ensuring consistency and reliability in data submission.

It covered essential topics, including the importance of tourism statistics, key indicators, standardized templates, basic statistical units, and proper data reporting techniques. Participants were guided through common data collection challenges and engaged in hands-on exercises to practice encoding, verifying, and submitting reports. An open forum provided an opportunity to address concerns and clarify reporting requirements.

Beyond technical training, the session heightened awareness of the crucial role LGU personnel and AEs play in tourism data management. Participants recognized the significance of accurate and timely reporting in tourism planning, policy formulation, and program implementation. However, some establishments highlighted challenges in verifying data accuracy before submission, emphasizing the need for additional support and guidance. The session also allowed LGU Pugo to refine its tourism database, including the establishment of Barangay Tourism Development Councils.

Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David expressed the need to continuously improve tourism practices in all component LGUs using data-based reporting. She assured the PGLU’s heightened support to Pugo’s venture into improving its tourism practices and position it as one of the province’s haven for tourists.

By addressing existing challenges and reinforcing standardized practices, the initiative contributes to a more reliable and efficient tourism data management system. Given Pugo’s prime location and growing tourism presence, their enhanced monitoring practices allows them to improve reporting compliance, ultimately facilitating data-driven tourism policies and strategies that translates to better tourism outputs.
