The Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the La Union Provincial Jail (LUPJ), in collaboration with the City of San Fernando Parole and Probation Office (PPO) and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology – Provincial Office I (BJMP-PO1), joined the celebration of National Correctional Conscious Week (NACOCOW) during the last week of October 2024.
NACOCOW is a simultaneous nationwide celebration of all jail institutions and Parole and Probation Offices intended to instill awareness in the public on the plight of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) and those undergoing probation inside the jail facility. It is an integral part of their rehabilitation and reformation using recreational and upbuilding programs that help them eventually reintegrate into the mainstream society.
They instituted the Friendship Basketball Cup on October 21, 22, and 28, 2024. Four teams were composed of the LUPJ PDL, LUPJ Personnel, BJMP RO1 personnel, and probationers. The probationers were declared champions of the tournament. Another highlight of the celebration was the search for Mr. NACOCOW where 8 PDLs participated and showcased their talent. Various parlor games, raffles, and Zumba for a Cause were also conducted to provide further entertainment to the participants. All of these were organized to promote the rehabilitation and human rights of PDLs.
Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David, through Executive Assistant Eleazar Belgica, highlighted the importance of the roles of jail personnel and the need for effective policies that support the rehabilitation programs. According to her, “Naniniwala po kami na every person deserves a second chance in our inclusive society kaya patuloy po tayong gagawa ng paraan para matulungan ang ating mga KaPROBINSYAnihan na nasa loob pa po.”
.
With the PGLU’s participation in NACOCOW, KaPROBINSYAnihan can be assured that everyone’s rights are recognized and cherished in La Union, regardless of their background.
