Honoring Legacy: PGLU Commemorates 123 Years of Don Joaquin Ortega’s Leadership

In a solemn ceremony, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) commemorated the 123rd anniversary of the appointment of Don Joaquin J. Ortega as the first Filipino Civil Governor of the province of La Union on August 15, 1901. The event took place in front of his statue at the Provincial Capitol Lobby, City of San Fernando, La Union, on August 15, 2024, where wreath-laying ceremonies commenced to honor Don Joaquin Ortega’s significant contributions to the development of La Union.
PGLU department heads and employees gathered to pay tribute to Don Joaquin, recognizing his vital role in establishing civil governance during a transformative period in Philippine history. The ceremonies underscored his legacy and the importance of his leadership in fostering progress and unity among the people of La Union.
As part of the celebration, PGLU employees participated in a community singing of Lupang Hinirang, followed by an Iloko Prayer, and singing of La Union Hymn and Pilipinas kong mahal. PGLU employees were encouraged to reflect on their history and the contributions of leaders like Don Joaquin Ortega, who laid the foundations for modern governance in La Union.
