Following his appointment as the new Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Herminigildo M. Velasco rendered a comprehensive presentation on the programs, projects, and activities (PPAs) under the Provincial Health Office (PHO), status of implementation of PHO-related provincial ordinances, and other strategic plans on the health sector during the 106th Regular Session of the 23rd Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) on July 9, 2024 at the SP Session Hall, Provincial Capitol, City of San Fernando, La Union.
His presentation focused on the various PPAs being implemented by the PHO to enhance the healthcare services in the province including Maternal, Neo-natal, Child Health and Nutrition; Disaster Risk Reduction of Management in Health (DRRM-H); TB-DOTS; Family Planning; Population; Nutrition; Immunization; HIV/AIDS; Leprosy Elimination; and Environmental Sanitation, among others.
In addition, Dr. Velasco reported that La Union was the only one out of the two universal healthcare implementation sites to achieve 70% of the functional level required. On the PUSO Caravan and Saluad Salun-at Medical and Dental Program, 6,724 KaPROBINSYAnihan from the 112 Barangays of the 16 participating municipalities and one city in the province were provided with medical consultation, laboratory services, and dental services from January to June 2024.
As per the status of implementation of Provincial Ordinances wherein his office is the implementing department, particularly on the DRRM-H, La Union Iron Fortified Rice, Pinggang Pinoy, Malunggay, HIV/AIDS Council, Program for Teenage Pregnancy, and Malaria Elimination Hub, Dr. Velasco confirmed the continuous execution of the ordinances. Furthermore, they are programmed in their 2025 Annual Investment Program to ensure inclusion in the appropriation for the needed funding.
Through the PHO’s proactive leadership and enactment of projects, the Provincial Government of La Union has managed to continue rolling out medical initiatives geared toward promoting accessible and quality healthcare to the general public, especially in the Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas, Indigenous Peoples, Farmers and Fisherfolks, and Youth constituents. Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David assures that PGLU will maintain its position in lobbying for every KaPROBINSYAnihan’s right to decent, safe, and prompt delivery of medical services.
