A total of 67 Student Workers under the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) of the Department of Labor and Employment receive their salary from the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) for their 20-day rendered service on September 13, 2024, at the Speaker Pro Tempore Francisco I. Ortega Convention Center (La Union Convention Center), City of San Fernando, La Union.
Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David led the payout of salaries to the SPES workers during the LU Handog ng Pangulo: Serbisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat Program, the nationwide birthday celebration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Each SPES worker received Php 11,818.20, which represents 100% of their salary fully covered by the PGLU for their 20 days of work at a daily rate of Php 590.01.
The SPES Workers, who are students from different schools in La Union, were assigned to the various offices and district hospitals of PGLU. They were able to contribute to the offices’ productivity as part of the workforce while learning from their supervisors. Before assuming their positions, they were also oriented by the staff led by Provincial Public Employment Service Office (PESO) Manager Charito C. Dator about the objectives of the SPES program, the PESO services, proper office decorum, duties and responsibilities of a SPES worker, the guidelines on SPES implementation, and the requirements needed to claim their salary.
SPES is mandated under Republic Act No. 7323, otherwise known as “An Act To Help Poor But Deserving Students Pursue Their Education By Encouraging Their Employment During Summer and/or Christmas Vacations.” It is one of the PESO programs that aims to help underprivileged but deserving students through the provision of employment opportunities that will help them gain skills, experience, and income while pursuing their education. It has always been a part of PGLU’s plans of action for education and employment among the youth. The next set of applications and hiring for the said program will be announced by the PGLU next year on its official platforms.
