The Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) Committee on Tourism chaired by Board Member (BM) Joy R. Ortega extended its support to strengthen the Safety and Security in Tourism Accommodation Establishments in San Juan, La Union, a major tourist destination in La Union, during a meeting with San Juan Restaurant, Resort and Hotel Association (SJRRHAss) and San Juan Apartment and Apartelle Association (SJAAA) on July 28, 2022 at San Juan, La Union. The activity was spearheaded by the La Union Police Provincial Office (LUPPO) led by PCOL JONATHAN G CALIXTO.
This is following the recent burglary incidents in the area wherein various accommodation establishments were victimized by robbers who are now under the custody of the Philippine National Police (PNP) as reported by PLTCOL RAFAEL LERO, Deputy Provincial Director for Operations.
In the said meeting, BM Ortega was invited to discuss possible interventions to sustain the integrity of the province as a tourist attraction.
βTourism is the number one income generating industry in the world and it goes hand in hand with peace and order. Now that tourism is slowly picking up, we must be ready for the influx of tourists, we have a social responsibility to fulfill,β she said, reiterating that La Union must be tourist-friendly and must make the people feel safe.
BM Ortega also reported efforts being done by the PGLU legislative department to strengthen tourism security and safety. One of which is the inspection of accommodation establishmentsβ compliance in laws needed to keep establishments and tourists safe. βWe have started doing spot checks in accommodation establishments in San Juan, La Union to look at their compliance in the CCTV ordinance. We must re-evaluate the ordinance, adapt best practices, think ten steps ahead of possible problems and come up with preventive measures,β she added.
She also stated her intent to work closely with the SP Committee on Trade Commerce and Industry, SP Committee on Peace and Order, LUPPO and San Juan PNP to ensure that all legislative policies to safeguard tourists and tourism establishments, shall be passed. She also encouraged the stakeholders to help the government in this undertaking saying, βI enjoin you to fervently collaborate with us as we strengthen our world-class tourism services in La Union with us being your policy-makers, the PNP being the law enforcers and you being law-abiding citizens.β
On behalf of the organizations, SJRRHAss President Tina Antonio, gave her commitment to cooperate in all government programs being implemented that sustain tourist safety and security.
PD Calixto recognized the PGLU for its continuous efforts in support to PNPβs implementation of anti-criminality programs in pursuit to make La Union a better place to live, work, visit and do business. According to him, the depleted number of police forces hinders them to fully implement the laws and they are thankful that PGLU is dedicated in partnering with them towards the prevention of crimes in the province.
