In partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the La Union Provincial Tourism Office – Culture and the Arts Unit held the first 2 Phases of its Cultural Mapping Project through a Scoping and Negotiation and Social Preparation Meeting on November 21, 2022 at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – Open University System Multi-Purpose Hall, Catbangen, City of San Fernando, La Union.

The participants were composed of various stakeholders in the province such as teachers from the Department of Education, municipal and barangay officials, and representatives from the academe, who served as local mappers. Local historian and Iloko writer Errol Abrew and Gunglo dagiti Mannurat nga Ilokano – La Union Chapter President and La Union Council for Culture Arts, and Language Member Djuna Alcantara were also present in the meeting and served as observers and reactors. The program aims to help in the identification and documentation of cultural properties and resources in the Province of La Union.

Gov. Raphaelle Veronica β€œRafy” Ortega-David, in her message delivered by Executive Assistant IV Justo "Tito" Orros III, lauded the NCAA for its plan and initiative of cultural mapping in the province. She extended her gratitude to the NCCA for the commitment and support to the Provincial Government for the conduct of the Cultural Mapping Program in the Province of La Union through the Signing of Memorandum of Understanding.

NCCA Representative Farland Valera who served as the Resource Speaker and Facilitator, presented the Objectives of the project and led the discussions of the Cultural Mapping Framework and Project Phases in accordance with the NCAA Guidelines.

During the afternoon session, a meeting via Zoom video conferencing was also conducted with other NCCA Representatives PJ Catumber, Floper Gershwin Manuel, and Lorenzo Isla, who challenged the cultural mappers to list down all the cultural properties of the province which was later on presented to the whole group.

Provincial Tourism Officer Arthur S. Cortez, Jr. extended PGLU’s gratitude to the NCCA team, local mapping team, and all the staff for being part of the project in his message read by Culture and Arts Officer Darlene A. Buccat.

In the realization of #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan, PGLU is looking forward to the completion of the cultural mapping project next year. Thus, the commitment and efforts exerted by the local mapping team and the component LGUs of the province willl be very vital in preserving the province's cultural properties of a revered past.
