As part of the celebration of Environmental Awareness Month, Climate Change Consciousness Week, and Clean Air Month, the Provincial Government of La Union, through its Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO) conducted the second Environmental Summit on Nov 25, 2022 at Ynadโ€™s Resort in San Fernando City, La Union. To accommodate more audience, a live coverage of the event was also streamed via Provincial Government of La Union Facebook Page.

EnP. Shereal M. Catbagan said during program briefing that November is filled with nationally significant environmental programs in our country thus, the best month to conduct environmental summit. She also added that consistent with the #KalikasanNaman and #LaUnionProbinsyanihan campaign of PGLU, it is important to involve the youth in protecting our finite natural resources.

Gov. Raphaelle Veronica โ€œRafyโ€ Ortega-David graced the event through her recorded message where she reiterated the importance of the youth in preserving the environment for the future generation. She also thanked everyone for showing care for our environment by raising awareness and relevance for jumpstarting the course toward preserving the environment.

Moreover. Vice-Governor Mario Eduardo C. Ortega also graced the event and expressed that it is important to educate the root, who is the youth. โ€œDatoy Climate Change a kunada, nagdakkelan apo a banag datoy babaen ti salun-at ti tao, babaen ti panagbiag ti humanity in our planet, he said.

Board Member Joy C. Ortega, who is known for her environmental advocacies, reiterated the importance of environmental ethics as well as environmental justice in preserving the environment. She enjoined everyone to always serve as spokespersons to something that cannot talk--the environment.

Board Member Pablo C. Ortega, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee Chair on Environment, Human Ecology and Security reminded the participants that the environment should not be exploited and abused and should be consumed sustainably.

Sen. Loren Legarda served as the keynote speaker of the said event. She said, during her recorded message, that the theme for this yearโ€™s Climate Change Awareness Month โ€œRising Up Beyond Climate Talk to Climate Actionโ€ is such a fitting theme to underscore the urgency for all our leaders and citizens to take steps and make progress in our fight for climate change. She encouraged the youth in La Union to make changes in their beautiful province and identify actions and solutions they can propose or initiate to make the community more prepared in light of the issues and challenges we all face. She added that as youth leaders, they are the key players in the climate action agenda.

Technical personnel of PG-ENRO served as resource speakers in environmental topics such as Air Quality Management, Solid Waste Management, Safer Chemicals, Forestry Management, Water Conservation, Habitat Destruction and Biodiversity, and Best Practices in Mining Operations.

Mr. Ramon Toby Tamayo, the Environmental Consultant of PGLU talked about Greener Living, He highlighted during his talk that green living is choosing to simplify your lifestyle and acting on higher consciousness of conservation. Additionally, Mr. Mark Ryan Talajuron of Lupon ng mga Indibidwal na Nangangalaga ng Kalikasan (LINK) also shared the best practices of the organization on different environmental and youth-related programs.

EnP. Ayen, OIC PG-ENRO, thanked everyone who participated in the success of the summit. Furthermore, she reiterated that the engagement of everyone in various environmental programs signifies the commitment to the call for action as one province dubbed as #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan and the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders mark a relentless commitment to upholding the vision of the Province to be the heart of Agritourism in Northern Luzon by 2025.
