La Union sprinter Frederick Ramirez of Brgy. Ubagan, Santo Tomas, La Union once again brought pride to the country and the province after earning a silver medal in the men's 400 meters individual category during the 82nd Open Track and Field Championship 2022 held in Singapore.

This marks his third time joining and representing the country in an international competition abroad after bagging a bronze medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and ranked fourth in the 2022 SEA games in Hanoi, Vietnam last May.

In an interview with the Provincial Information Office, the 24-year old national athlete feels proud and honored to showcase his skill while representing the country and the Province of La Union in the said competition.

"Naragsakak sir ta siak ti nagrepresent iti pagiliantayo ken thankfulak ta siak ti napilida a player lalo tatta ket siak ti number 1 iti Pilipinas iti 400m category. Siguro dakkel ti tiwalada kaniak a siak ti ilablaban da iti bansatayo. Agpaspasalamatak iti pamiliak ken dagidiay barkadak lalo dagiti taga-La Union iti suporta da kaniak kadagiti amin a laban ko", he said.

Possessing with optimism and self-confidence, Ramirez strive to finish the game despite suffering from a leg injury during the competition. His perseverance and determination towards his goal to secure a title while gaining experience has led him to a remarkable achievement.

The La Union Pride also shared that the difficulties in life that they have encountered with his family motivated him to pursue his dream to become an athlete. His journey in track and field began in the year 2016 in his hometown until he got discovered in the year 2018 in Manila which brought him more opportunities in the said field. He established himself and emerged victorious in his competitions until he became part of the national team.

"Saan ko met gamin inexpect nga agbalinak nga atleta ta siguro daytoy ti inkeddeng ni Apo kaniak a talento nga isu ti araramatek tatta ket gapu iti daytoy ket adu met ti maitultulongna para kanyak. Daytoy talento nga inted iti Apo kanyak ket sulsulitek bayat nga ubingak pay ta saan ko met a maibaga nga agnanayonak nga agbalin nga atleta", he added.

The La Union native is now a 4th year criminology student at the Jose Rizal University in Metro Manila while enjoying his career as a Philippine athlete. He is also preparing and looking forward to play in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games and Olympics.

In fulfillment of Gov. Rafy's #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan in empowering sports in the Province, the Provincial Government of La Union and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan awarded cash incentives and a resolution of commendation to Mr. Ramirez during the 3rd Regular Session as a support for bringing pride and honor to the country and in La Union.
