A total of 38 employees of the La Union Medical Center (LUMC) underwent an intensive Fire Brigade Training Course designed and facilitated by the Agoo, La Union Bureau of Fire Protection (ALUBFP) personnel from May 17-21, 2022.

The five-day training program was held in compliance with the requirements of ISO 45000:2018 Standards for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and aimed to provide participants the necessary knowledge, skills, competencies and confidence on fire hazard prevention and management in the workplace and to safely and effectively operate as fire brigade.

The training included topics and demonstrations on actual on-fire safety services, fire suppression and control, firefighting skills, firefighting apparatus, tools and equipment, basic search and rescue methods and techniques, knot tying, bandaging and hose throwing, rappelling and field training exercises in both fire and medical scenarios.

On its first day, a safety briefing and outline of the training courses were given and presented, respectively. Participants were assigned to teams led by experienced officers from ALUBFP and were given detailed instructions on what was expected of them and what they could expect as the training progressed.

Included on the second day were discussions on frequently-asked questions regarding fire prevention and demonstrations on how to use fire extinguishers and how to strategically put out a fire. The third day was a hands-on training where in participants showed off their rappelling and way finding skills as they individually carried out the zero visibility crawl and the three kinds of rappel namely, standard, Australian and lizard. The last two days of the course were devoted to search and rescue and firefighting methods and techniques.

Throughout the training, participants were reminded of the importance of working safely, communicating, knowing their surroundings and following the action plan and orders given by their team leaders.

โ€œOur participants and future fire fighters got to see how an actual fire behaves. They got to learn techniques for combating fire and use core methods taught during their training and this type of training provided an excellent opportunity for them to experience first-hand many of the activities and challenges they will encounter on real fire ground operationsโ€, said Senior Inspector Noel M. Chan, Municipal Fire Marshall of the Agoo, La Union Bureau of Fire Protection on its Culmination Program on May 23, 2022.
