For this year, the Provincial Government of La Union - Environment and Natural Resources Officeโs (PG-ENRO) Waste Management Awareness Campaign focuses on the concepts of Total Solid Waste Management Solutions and Prevention, Reduction, and Management of Marine Litter, hence, an online Waste Management Awareness Campaign was conducted last March 18, 2022 attended by Environment and Natural Resources Officers (ENRO) of the component Local Government Units (LGUs).
Gov. Francisco Emmanuel โPacoyโ R. Ortega III, through a video-recorded message, welcomed the participants and encouraged everyone to take actions in defending the environment to ensure that the future generation will have a better place to live in โAs we continue adapting our lives to the new normal, our mission for our environment continues; to take responsibility to be a part of nature and not apart from it,โ he said.
Resource speakers invited for the online campaign were EnP. Marygail Antonnette N. Killa of DENR-EMB Region 1, Ms. Alita Sangalang of DENR- Biodiversity Management Bureau Central Office and Mr. Voltaire Acosta of the UN-Habitat Philippines and Healthy Oceans and Cities Initiative.
EnP. Marygail Antonnette N. Killa presented the recently approved National Solid Waste Management Commission Resolution No. 1452 series of 2021 โAdopting the Total Solid Waste Management Solution to optimize Waste Recovery and Utilization in the Sanitary Landfills prior to Disposal.โ She further discussed the vital processes and strategies involved in Total Solid Waste Management Solutions from waste prevention, reduction, recycling, and management of disposal facilities.
On the other hand, Ms. Alita Sangalang presented the overarching vision - โA Philippines free of marine litter through shared responsibility, accountability and participatory governance.โ She presented the effects of marine litter to the Philippine marine biodiversity and the local studies conducted showing the presence and effects of marine pollution especially the microplastics in the Philippine waters.
Mr. Voltaire Acosta discussed the National Plan of Action for the Prevention, Reduction, and Management of Marine Litter. He emphasized the role of LGUs specifically Recycling and Market Enhancement and Waste Collection and Disposal. He also mentioned about the ongoing initiative on localizing the action plan for marine litter in cities and municipalities.
