Unity and Independence Emphasized as PGLU Honors National Flag Day

In a display of unwavering integrity and unity, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) celebrated the 125th National Flag Day on May 29, 2023, at the Provincial Capitol Building in the City of San Fernando, La Union. Vice Governor Mario Eduardo C. Ortega, representing Gov. Raphaelle Veronica "Rafy" Ortega-David, led the flag-raising ceremony, accompanied by Board Member Cynthia Angelica M. Bacurnay and Board Member Victor I. Rivera. The event was attended by representatives from various provincial government offices.
During the ceremony, Provincial Administrator Agnes Grace A. Cargamento delivered a message on behalf of Gov. Rafy, acknowledging the courageous men and women who fought for freedom and liberation. "Tayo po dito sa Provincial Capitol ay nakikiisa sa pagtataas ng watawat ng Pilipinas bilang pagbibigay galang sa simbolo ng ating soberanya at pagkakaisa at paggalang sa mga sakripisyo ng ating mga bayani upang ating makamit ang kalayaan na ating tinatamasa," she expressed in her speech.
Cargamento also assured the public that the PGLU remains committed to advancing programs that promote genuine independence for the province's residents. “Makakaasa po kayo na tayo sa PGLU ay patuloy na magsusulong ng mga programang magdadala ng tunay na kasarinlan para sa ating mga kaprobinsiaan. Sana po ay patuloy rin ang ating pakikipag-La Union PROBINSYAnihan para sa pagkamit ng kalayaan mula sa kahirapan na madadala at magpapanatili ng sama samang pag-unlad," she added.
The National Flag Day is commemorated annually on May 28, honoring the first use of the Philippine flag after the triumph in the Battle of Alapan in 1898. This historic battle saw Filipino revolutionaries, led by General Emilio Aguinaldo, defeating Spanish troops and reclaiming the province of Cavite. On May 23, 1994, Executive Order No. 79 was issued extending the period of celebration from May 28 to June 12.
As an advocate of nation-building through #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan, the PGLU continues to prioritize the preservation and promotion of Filipino identity and heritage.
