PGLU Enhances Data Privacy Practices; Conducts Training for Employees, LGUs

To ensure compliance with the National Commission on Privacy (NCP) Circular No. 16-01 concerning the security of personal data in government agencies, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), through the Office of the Provincial Governor-Information and Communications Technology Unit and in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology Region I, conducted a three-day virtual training and seminar on Data Privacy Awareness on November 20-22, 2024.
This annual mandatory training was attended by 150 participants from various Local Government Units (LGUs) in La Union, as well as PGLU offices and district hospitals. The sessions included workshops aimed at deepening their understanding of data privacy protection and its importance.
Atty. Dominic Jose S. Puzon, Provincial Legal Officer and PGLU’s Data Protection Officer, highlighted the need for strict compliance to protect sensitive information and maintain public trust. In connection, the Data Privacy Act of 2012 or the R.A. 10173 was thoroughly discussed by Mr. Mark Anthony Portabes, DICT Certified Trainer on Data Privacy Protection and Cybersecurity. His discussion focused on its Declaration of Policy along with its Goals, Principles, and Guidelines; the Imposition of Penalties; the Data Privacy Security Measures; the Normative References: Data Privacy, Information Security; the Data Privacy and Security Control Policies; Breach and Security Incident Management; and the NCP.
Participants completed the training with a Practical Workshop session that allowed them to put their new knowledge into practice.
Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David, represented by Executive Assistant Eleazar Belgica, emphasized PGLU’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and data privacy to safeguard people’s personal information. “I encourage all of you to actively participate… this is part of our job as public servants, protecting our KaPROBINSYAnihan,” she said.
Through the said training, the PGLU reaffirms its commitment to promoting innovation and handling data responsibly through its strict compliance with the Data Privacy Act of 2012.
