Banking on its commitment to environmental sustainability, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), through its Provincial Government – Environmental and Natural Resources Office, expanded its National Zero Waste Month commemoration with additional activities, namely a Webinar on Sanitary Landfill and Septage Treatment Plant Operations and a Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) at the La Union Provincial Capitol on January 28, 2025 and January 30-31, 2025, respectively.
The webinar focused on the sustainability of waste infrastructures. With the province establishing several wastewater treatment facilities in strategic areas and achieving 100 percent sanitary landfill waste disposal coverage, effective management of these facilities is crucial to ensure they remain operational and efficient. The activity discussed the proper management and operations of a Sanitary Landfill Facility and Septage Treatment Plant, including the provisions of the Permit to Operate for Sanitary Landfill Facility.
Meanwhile, the WACS provided critical data on the total amount of waste generated per day, generation rate for each waste generator, and waste composition of generated solid waste. It aimed to evaluate the current solid waste management system of the PGLU and assist in its ISO Environmental Management System certification. Findings revealed that the PGLU offices generate 142.97 kilograms of waste per day, consisting of 33.60% recyclables, 22% biodegradables, 38.32% residuals for disposal, 5.73% residuals with potential for recycling, and 0.32% special wastes. This will help the PGLU determine ways forward in handling trash.
Both activities reinforced PGLU’s commitment to sustainable waste management, providing valuable insights to enhance policies and improve waste reduction efforts. As the National Zero Waste Month concludes, all KaPROBINSYAnihan are encouraged to continue individual waste management practices, guided by the leadership of Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy Ortega-David under the Kalikasan Naman Campaign.
