Aligned with the celebration of National Women’s Month, Naguilian District Hospital successfully conducted a Lactation Management Training program on February 26-28, 2025, equipping nursing and clinical staff with essential skills to support breastfeeding mothers and ensure optimal newborn care. It was designed to strengthen the quality of maternal and newborn care, emphasizing both the technical and supportive aspects of lactation.

The program focused on developing counseling skills such as listening, learning, and building confidence in mothers to overcome common breastfeeding challenges. These sessions were crucial in preparing participants to provide consistent support for mothers facing difficulties such as positioning, latching, and milk supply issues. It also explored the impact of birth and postnatal practices on the mother’s ability to breastfeed successfully.

Beyond theoretical learning, hands-on sessions covering breastfeeding, positioning a baby, and understanding breast and nipple conditions were also included. The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding framework was discussed for healthcare facilities to implement evidence-based practices. Accordingly, postnatal care and discharge support are equally important to the preparation, ensuring mothers continue to receive the necessary guidance and assistance after leaving the hospital.

This is part of a series of professional development activities, facilitated by Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative of NDH’s Head Facilitator Dr. Cinderella P. Florendo; Provincial Health Office’s (PHO) Supervising Midwife Criselda G. Javier; PHO’s Nutrition Officer III Jennie B. Apilas; and PHO’s Nurse II Ma. Daphne G. Aleta. The training and practicum will be having its second and third batches scheduled for March and April of this year.

The training serves as a testament to the crucial role women play in nurturing future generations. By equipping healthcare providers with the knowledge and tools to support breastfeeding, NDH champions the well-being of mothers and babies across the province. As the first woman and breastfeeding mother governor in La Union, Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David fully supports the training program and hopes to extend the reach to more professionals in La Union.
