Residents exhibited their participation to #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan by rescuing two sea turtles. These voluntary acts are aligned to Provincial Government of La Union’s commitment in preserving biodiversity in the province through its #KalikasanNaman Campaign and as part of the celebration of the International Day of Biological Diversity (IDBD). The PG-ENRO staff together with the Local Government Unit of Luna provided assistance in securing the sea turtles.
On May 26, 2023, a female Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) was found along the sea water of Darigayos Beach, Luna, La Union by fisherman Mr. Jun Nuval. The wildlife seemed to be too weak to continue swimming which prompted the fisherfolk to rescue it. Currently, the turtle is under the care of CURMA, San Juan.
After few days, another sea turtle was rescued by a fisherman Mr. Leody Dela Cruz on May 30, 2023. The wildlife is a female hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Its carapace and plastron did not exhibit any lesion, abnormality or any biofouling organism such as barnacles, so they immediately released it back to its home.
With this year’s theme, “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biological Diversity,” the IDBD has been celebrated every 22nd of May since the year 2000 around the world to raise awareness on the values, relevance, and importance of biodiversity to human lives and all life forms.
Gov. Raphaelle Veronica Ortega-David encouraged our kaprobinsiaan to take part in raising awareness on biodiversity as we show our #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan in protecting and preserving nature as we step closer to the attainment of our vision for La Union to be the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025.
