La Union Opens Fish Hatchery, To Produce Up To 500K Fingerlings Annually

Strengthening the province’s aquaculture industry, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, inaugurated and blessed the Multi-Species Hatchery and Aquaculture Facility in Barangay Sta. Rita Central, Agoo, La Union on January 16, 2025. This modern facility aims to boost fish production, support local fisherfolk, and contribute to food security and economic growth in the province.

The hatchery is designed to increase tilapia fingerling production from 400,000 to 500,000 pieces annually, ensuring the availability of fingerlings at affordable prices. Additionally, it will serve as a venue for research and training for farmers, fisherfolk, and stakeholders exploring aquaculture ventures and developing innovative technologies.

Governor Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David led the ceremony, joined by barangay officials, stakeholders, and community members. In her message, the governor underscored the significance of aquaculture for the province’s sustainable future.

“Ngayong may sarili na po tayong fish hatchery dito sa Sta. Rita, may pasilidad na po na magsusuri, mag-aalaga, at magpaparami ng iba’t ibang klase ng isda rito. Makakaasa po tayo na gagaan ang trabaho ng mga KaPROBINSYAnihan nating mangingisda at ng buong agri-fishery community. Nariyan din ang mga skill development and capability programs o mga trainings na maaari nating i-organisa simula ngayon. At higit sa lahat, panibagong pagkukuhanan po natin ito ng isdang maaari nating ihain sa ating mga pamilya,” Gov. Rafy said.

The event concluded with a guided tour of the facility, showcasing its innovative design and operational features. Participants expressed enthusiasm about the opportunities this initiative brings to local fisherfolk and the aquaculture industry.

The Multi-Species Hatchery and Aquaculture Facility is a testament to the spirit of #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan, where collaboration and unity drive progress. It serves as a beacon of progress, enriching the lives of La Union’s coastal communities and driving the province toward its vision as the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon.
