In celebration of International Day of Forests 2025, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), through the Provincial Government - Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO), spearheaded the Sukat Bukel Program on March 21, 2025. This program, held under the #KalikasanNaman Campaign, promotes innovative environmental practices by encouraging communities to collect forest and fruit-bearing seeds in exchange for rice.
The Sukat Bukel Program aims to foster community-based seed conservation and management, ensuring that seeds are properly utilized rather than discarded. A total of 22 individuals participated, exchanging various seeds such as Alibangbang, Anonas, Balitbitan, Bitaog, Botong, Chico, Mango, and Star Apple for rice.
To support ongoing reforestation efforts, PG-ENRO will propagate the collected seeds in its three plant nurseries located in Brgy. Pias, City of San Fernando; Brgy. Damortis, Santo Tomas; and Brgy. Taboc, San Juan. Once grown, these seedlings will be used for future tree-planting activities.
With the Sukat-Bukel program as an ongoing environmental initiative, the PGLU continues to champion La Union PROBINSYAnihan focused on environmental conservation to ensure a greener and more sustainable future for La Union.
