La Union Commemorates World Wetlands Day with 3,000 Mangrove Seedlings Planted

In celebration of World Wetlands Day, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) successfully conducted a mangrove planting activity at Barangay Pitpitac, Luna, La Union, on February 1, 2025.
Organized in partnership with the Embassy of Canada, the Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions (CURMA), and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Luna, the event gathered over 200 participants from various sectors, demonstrating their commitment to La Union PROBINSYAnihan and the #KalikasanNaman advocacy of PGLU.
More than 3,000 seedlings of Rhizophora, Saging-saging, and Dungon were planted with the help of volunteers from CURMA, LGU-Luna, the Liga ng mga Barangay, Sangguniang Kabataan, the Bureau of Fire Protection, the Philippine National Police, the Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Namacpacan, St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish, and local residents.
This year’s World Wetlands Day carries the theme “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,” emphasizing the vital role wetlands play in preserving biodiversity and ensuring a sustainable future. The event served as a platform to raise awareness about the ecological significance of wetlands, particularly in combating climate change and protecting coastal ecosystems.
The initiative stands as a testament to La Union’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability and natural resource conservation, reinforcing the importance of collective action in safeguarding the environment for present and future generations.
