In celebration of National Information and Communications Technology Month, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through La Union Provincial Jail (LUPJ) joined forces with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Region I and Institute of Electronics Communications Engineers of the Philippines – La Union Pangasinan (IECEP-LUPANG) Chapter to conduct a 3-day Digital Literacy Training program.
Aimed to equip Persons Deprived with Liberty (PDL) and personnel from LUPJ with essential digital skills, the training took place from June 7 to June 9, 2023.
The comprehensive training sessions covered the basic operations of MS Applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Participants were provided with hands-on learning experiences to familiarize themselves with these widely used software programs. Moreover, the training also encompassed computer and internet essentials, ensuring that the attendees gained a solid foundation in utilizing digital tools effectively.
To further enhance the knowledge of the participants, DICT Region I conducted a brief orientation on Data Privacy Security Awareness Seminar in line with Republic Act No. 10173. This is focused on educating PDLs and LUPJ personnel about data protection and the importance of safeguarding personal and sensitive information in the digital age.
By equipping both the LUPJ personnel and PDLs with digital literacy skills, it empowers them to navigate the modern world more effectively and increase PDLs' employment prospects upon reintegration into society.
With the effective #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan of the Provincial Government of La Union, DICT Region I and IECEP-LUPANG in the implementation of such initiative, the PGLU-LUPJ is looking forward into the possibility of conducting additional capacity training programs for PDLs as they too could contribute positively in the achievement of the province's vision to be the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025.
