In celebration of the National Consciousness Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children on November 25, 2020, a representative from the City of San Fernando Police Station was invited to speak particularly about RA 9262, “an act defining violence against women and their children providing for protective measures for victims, prescribing penalties therefore and for other purposes” at the Out Patient Department of Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH).

In her opening remarks, Dr. Zenserly D. Pagaduan, BDH Chief of Hospital, encouraged those who experience violence and abuses to seek assistance to proper authorities, informing the audience that BDH extends assistance to women and children undergoing such violence through the Hospital’s Women and Children Protection Unit.

Non Uniformed Personnel Irish C. Fangwa from the City of San Fernando Police Station explained that “the law recognizes the unequal relations between a man and a woman in an abusive relationship where the woman is usually at a disadvantage, thus the law protects the woman and her children, although women can also be liable under this law. These are the lesbian partners or girlfriends with whom a woman has had a relationship. She further explained about the different acts concerning this law such as Physical Violence; Sexual Violence; Psychological Violence; Economic Abuse. In her parting words she encouraged women to be vigilant and to report any incident if they believe their rights are being violated.

BDH is not only concerned on the healthy wellbeing of its patients but also their rights, specifically, the rights of women and children.
