The Provincial Government of La Union through the leadership of Gov. Rafy Ortega-David is now all perked up as it prepares for the “big swell” that is the La Union Surfing Break (LUSB).

The LUSB 2023 Technical Working Group (TWG) convened on August 15, 2023 for its second coordination meeting, where the planned activities and competitions were bared.

Now on its 17th year, the LUSB 2023 tentatively scheduled on November 3-5, 2023 is expected to be bigger and grander as the towns of San Juan, Bacnotan, and Agoo have confirmed their same commitment to stage their respective LUSB. Two more component Local Government Units (LGUs) – City of San Fernando and Luna – have also signified participation to the LUSB.

“Now that five LGUs are expected to localize the LUSB, we expect more tourism activities to be spread out all over the province. This speaks strongly how we embody #LaUnionProbinsiyanihan as we continue to ride the waves of tourism,” La Union Provincial Tourism Arthur S. Cortez Jr. said to re-echo the thrusts of Gov. Rafy.

Among the activities to be expected are surfing competitions and clinics; watersports and beach games; music festivals and entertainment; and food fairs.

Heeding the call of Governor Rafy for environmental and social sustainability, the LUSB 2023 will also put strong emphasis on ecological activities such as coastal cleanup, rescue and emergency response camps, and a special activity for pawikan conservation dubbed “Journey of the Flippers.”

Aside from the component LGUs, the PGLU also partners with the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection to ensure tourist safety and security. The La Union Multi-Sectoral Governance Council (MSGC) also pitched in to maximize public-private participation in the LUSB, which is touted as one of the Best Tourism Activities in the country.
