In a bid to showcase the thrilling potential of boat paddling as an adventure sport in the province, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg), successfully organized the province's first-ever Fishing Boat Marathon known as the Bangka-thon. Held on June 8, 2023, at Barangay Ilocanos Sur, City of San Fernando, La Union, this event served as one of the highlights of the province's month-long celebration of Bulan ti Mannalon ken Mangngalap.

The Bangka-thon, a human-powered watercraft racing contest inspired by the Dragon Boat Racing, was participated in by the chosen representatives from the four coastal municipalities of Bauang, Caba, San Juan, and San Fernando City. The Bangka-thon features a 400-meter boat paddling racing by the sea with contestants maneuvering wooden fishing boats using only oars or paddles to propel themselves forward.

Ms. Agnes Grace A. Cargamento, the Officer-in-Charge of OPAg, expressed her heartfelt congratulations
to all the participants during her welcome speech. She voiced her hope that this event would pave the way for the province to compete on an international stage. She also emphasized the potential of paddling sports as an attractive feature of Agri-Tourism in La Union. Ms. Cargamento further highlighted the increased support provided to fisherfolk under the dynamic leadership of Gov. Raphaelle Veronica "Rafy" Ortega-David.

On the other hand, Gov. Rafy reflected on the conclusion of the Bulan ti Mannalon ken Mangngalap activities, expressing her immense pride and gratitude. She extended her appreciation to the Provincial Government of La Union and the entire OPAg for shining a spotlight on the farmers, fisherfolk, and agri-preneurs in La Union.

The event culminated with an awarding ceremony, recognizing the exceptional performances of the participants. In the Group Category, Kamandag Poro from the City of San Fernando secured 1st place, closely followed by Canaoay, also from the City of San Fernando, in 2nd place, and San Agustin, again representing the City of San Fernando, in 3rd place. Meanwhile, for the Individual Category, City Kamandag from the City of San Fernando clinched 1st place, with Bauang Kaskasero from Bauang securing 2nd place, and San Juan Danggayan from San Juan, achieving 3rd place. Additionally, the City of San Fernando claimed the title of "Most Delightful Bangka" in both the 14-footer and 24-footer boat categories. Winners were given certificates, plaques, and cash prizes.

Indeed, with the unwavering support and participation of farmers and fisherfolks in #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan, the province is not far from the reality of its vision to be the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025.
