With life support training as a vital life skill that provides an individual the knowledge of dealing with medical emergencies, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) and Provincial Health Office (PHO) and in partnership with the Department of Health Region 1, conducted a three-day comprehensive training course on Standard First Aid and Basic Life Support (SFA-BLS) for PGLU Health and Safety Officers along with some personnel of the PHO and Balaoan District Hospital. This was conducted on April 25-27, 2022 at the PDRRMO Training Hall, Sevilla, City of San Fernando, La Union.
Facilitated by the PDRRMO Training Unit, PHO DRRM in Health Unit and DOH-RO1 Health Emergency Management Staff, the said training course aimed to ensure that PGLU health and safety officers and other concerned personnel are equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills to warrant the health, safety and security of their PGLU co-employees during emergencies, disasters, and other significant events.
For the first and second day of training, first aid, basic life support and health hazard and risks were introduced to the participants. After lectures, the facilitators demonstrated bandaging techniques for different injuries, proper handling and lifting of injured individuals as well as proper way to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation. A return demonstration followed to assess the comprehension of the participants and check for improvements needed.

The three-day SFA-BLS training was capped with a simulated incident wherein some of the participants acted as injured victims and rescuers. All 40 participants passed the training and successfully completed the necessary tasks for them to be accredited SFA-BLS trained responders.
The SFA-BLS is also conducted in preparation for the PGLU Earthquake Drill wherein evaluators from Office of Civil Defense, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Red Cross and DOH were invited for assessment.
The PGLU also plans to conduct alike trainings and drills to different agencies in the province to ensure appropriate, safe and secured emergency response for all Kaprobinsiaan.
