500 Fruit-bearing Tree Seedlings Planted in San Gabriel in Celebration of La Union Arbor Day

In pursuant to the Provincial Ordinance No. 034-2012, “An Act Declaring and Fixing the First Monday of June Every Year as the Arbor Day or Tree-Planting Day in La Union,” and in time for the celebration of World Environment Day, a total of 87 volunteers took part in planting 500 fruit-bearing tree seedlings on June 5, 2023 at Sitio Captaoan, San Gabriel, La Union.

The activity was initiated by the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the Provincial Government - Environment and Natural Resources Office in collaboration with the Municipal and Barangay Local Government Unit as well as the Sangguniang Kabataan and the Municipal Police Station (MPS) of San Gabriel, La Union.

San Gabriel Mayor Lany B. Carbonell was present in the activity wherein during the planting, she shared knowledge on the proper way of planting such as ring weeding right after the planting to avoid competition from different factors such as water, sunlight, nutrients and space thus affecting plant growth. Further, she also discussed the importance of survival monitoring and evaluation a year after the planting.

Representative from different departments and units of PGLU joined the activity, including the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, Local Economic Enterprise and Investment Promotions Unit, Provincial Health Office, La Union Provincial Jail, Office of the Governor, Information and Communications Technology Unit, Office of the Provincial Administrator, Provincial General Service Office and Provincial Information Office. With this, the team were able to plant 500 fruit bearing tree seedlings such as: 200 Coffee, 200 Cacao, 50 Avocado and 50 Jackfruit. Mr. Helson Dawara, lot owner committed to ensure the protection, growth and development of the planted fruit-bearing seedlings through proper care and maintenance.

Arbor Day celebrates the importance and value of trees. Aside from producing food for daily sustenance, trees perform the most important function which is the oxygen fixation and carbon dioxide absorption. Arbor Day was institutionalized in the Province of La Union to enrich biodiversity and promote a healthier ecosystem by rehabilitating and re-greening the environment to make a province worth living in for the present and future generations.

Also, in celebration of the National Arbor Day, another tree planting activity will be done in barangay Lon-oy, San Gabriel, La Union on June 26, 2023.
