Showcasing the identity symbols of the province through gastronomic experience, the official vegetable of the Province of La Union malunggay was the main feature of the LUTO: La Union Tastes and Organics Baking Competition held on December 14, 2022 at Cafรฉ Luis, Fr. Clement Daelman Building, Saint Louis College (SLC), Lingsat, City of San Fernando, La Union.
Participated in by various local bakers in La Union to promote the existence of the adopted provincial symbols throughout the province, the baking competition was conducted as part of the activities of Pasko sa Kapitolyo 2022 (PSK2022).
The Sweet Smile Food Hub represented by Lourdes Magpali-Villareal was adjudged as the First Place winner with her tasty malunggay quiche and received a cash prize of Php20,000. The Emerald Cafรฉ represented by Michael Caffrey came in Second Place with his creamy malunggay bagnet pie and claimed the prize of Php15,000. Third Place went to the Uvas Cafรฉ represented by Rudolph John Tavas and Daniel Montilla who prepared the cheesy malunggay focaccia and received Php10,000. Non-winners received a cash prize of Php8,000 each as consolation prizes.
The baking competition entries were judged according to the following criteria: 1. Taste, 40 percent; 2. Use of Malunggay as an ingredient, 20 percent; 3. Creativity and originality, 20 percent; 4. Mis en place, 10 percent, and 5. Cooking technique, 10 percent.
The panel of judges includes SLC Instructor and Chef Maria Maranon, Jaypeeโs Bakeshop Owner John Paul Naoe and Home Chef and Food Enthusiast Ma. Theresa โMatetโ Ancheta.
On behalf of Gov. Raphaelle Veronica โRafyโ Ortega-David, La Union Provincial Tourism Officer Arthur S. Cortez, Jr. graced the said PSK2022 activity. In his message he said that he is grateful that the province was again able to celebrate such festivities featuring identity symbols in the post-pandemic era. He also highlighted that with the modernization in agriculture, there are now more farmers who are venturing into entrepreneurship with more new processed food products being developed, as well as with the introduction of agri -tourism.
Strengthening its role in nation-building and continuous #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan, PGLU launched LUTO Baking Competition with the goal not only to support the growth and development of the local baking industry, but also promoting and sustaining the adopted Identity Symbols of the Province of La Union.
