To recognize the bravery and patriotic sacrifice of the fallen soldiers and veterans during the Second World War, a flag raising and wreath laying ceremony was held at the Shrine of the United States Armed Forces in the Philippine-Northern Luzon (USAFIP-NL) in Barangay Darigayos, Luna, La Union on April 9, 2022.

The ceremony highlights the week-long observance of the 80th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) and the Philippine Veterans Week with a theme β€œIka–80 Taong Paggunita sa Araw ng Kagitingan: Kagitingan ng mga Beterano, Inspirasyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino."

Philippine Veterans Affairs Office - La Union headed by Head Field Service Officer Adeadatus J. Retuta, and USAFIP-NL Military Shrine Officer-in-Charge Fischer Guererro lead the roster of offices, organization and veterans present during the ceremony. The Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) was represented by Provincial Tourism Officer Mr. Arthur S. Cortez, Jr. while Mr. Tito Gorospe, Municipal Tourism Officer-designate attended on behalf of the Local Government Unit of Luna, La Union. Other attending entities include Philippine National Police Regional Office 1 headed by PBGen. Enrique N. Magalona, and La Union Provincial Police Office headed by PCOL Jonathan G. Calixto.

On April 9, 1942, officials in command of Bataanβ€”where Filipino and American forces maintained the main resistance in the war against the Japaneseβ€”formally surrendered. PGLU joins the nation in commemorating not only the bravery and heroic act of martyr soldiers, but also in acknowledging the post war heroes for their selfless contribution in defending the Philippines in times of war and peace.
