Following the rumors of bird flu cases in La Union, Dr. Domingo Bobby C. Calub III, OIC - Provincial Veterinarian affirmed that the province is still avian influenza or bird flu- free during the 37th Regular Session of the 23rd Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) on March 14, 2023 at the SP Bldg., Provincial Capitol, City of San Fernando, La Union.

Dr. Calub said that the province was able to maintain this status despite being surrounded by the neighboring provinces with positive cases due to the joint efforts the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian, Department of Agriculture and other national government agencies, component local government units in the stringent implementation of programs and biosecurity measures. These include cleaning and disinfection; vaccination and awareness activities; poultry farm inspections; blood sampling (avian influenza and Newcastle disease test); seize and confiscation; and animal quarantine checkpoint inspection.

To further strengthen the safety and security of the province against the disease, legislative measures are also being passed such as the amendment of the Animal Quarantine Regulations Ordinance; amendment of the Mandatory Registration of Hog raisers and/or Backyard Farm Owners in Barangays; and Ordinance on Provincial Livestock and Its By-Products, Marketing and Price Stabilization.

Despite the zero case, Dr. Calub assured that his office will continue to be vigilant and shall implement preventive measures through #LaUnionProbinsyanihan to ensure the safety of animals and humans as well.

All issues and concerns raised by Dr. Calub on his report and the queries by the Honorable Sangguniang Panlalawigan Members were referred to the Committee on Agriculture and Aquatic Resources chaired by Board Member Geraldine R. Ortega for further study.
