In the observance of the 108th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary and in recognition to its mandated tasks for its patients and staff, the Northern La Union District Hospital in Balaoan, La Union under the leadership of Dr. Hazel Balbido, celebrated National Medicine Week on September 21–27, 2008.

Highlighting the week-long celebration was a “Well Baby Contest” participated by 32 babies and children from the catchment area in September 23. Participants were divided into two categories, ages two months to two years and two to four years. Judges were well-known Pediatricians from the province namely, Dr. Lydia Ramirez, Dr. Cherrie Directo and Dr. Mary Grace De Vera. As for the mothers, lectures on Breastfeeding, Immunization and Newborn Screening were conducted. To entertain the participants, parlor games and talent presentations were held in between. All mother and baby tandems went home with Certificates of Participation, tokens and bags of goodies. For the major prizes, additional cash gifts were awarded to the top two kids from both categories.

To further strengthen the disaster mitigation and prevention policy of the Province of La Union, a one-day seminar on Disaster Risk Management for Deputized Civil Defense Coordinators was conducted on October 8, 2008 at the Diego Silang Hall, Provincial Capitol Building, City of San Fernando, La Union.

It started with a comprehensive lecture on earthquake hazards and tsunami alert warning signals courtesy of Engr. Wilmer A. Legaspi, Philvolcs Science Research Analyst based in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija. It did not only equip participants with the basicknowledge on these particular calamities but also armed them with significantskills to manage and mitigate the risks of the impact.

Three farmers and a multi-purpose cooperative from the province of La Union bagged major awards during the Gawad Saka Regional Awarding Ceremonies held on September 17, 2008 at the Diego Silang Hall, Provincial Capitol Building, San Fernando City, La Union.

The winning La Union farmers are Alfredo Esperon from Barangay Cabaroan, San Juan as Outstanding Corn Farmer; Herbert Valdez from Barangay Pantar, Balaoan as Outstanding Young Farmer; Rogelio Ramos and family from Barangay Urayong, Bauang as Outstanding Farmer-Fisherfolk Family. The Anduyan Multi-puropose Cooperative of Tubao, La Union won the Outstanding Farmer/Fisherfolk Organization award. The Provincial Government of La Union under the leadership of Gov. Manuel C. Ortega, through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist headed by Mr. Avelino A. Lomboy, supported its province’s farmers in the Regional Gawad Saka Award with technical and input assistance as well as in the documentation of their entries.
