The La Union Vibrant Women, Inc. (LUVWI) gathered at the Diego Silang Hall of the Capitol Bldg on March 26, 2009 in celebration of the Women’s Month with the theme “Babae: Yaman ka ng bayan”.

In her welcome address, Ms. Geraldine R. Ortega, President of LUVWI urged the members to think of “betterment”. The “Mother of the Province” challenged everyone “to be better people and constituents of the province.” “Domino-effect of being good to others, it is best to set good examples to others and do things for the greater glory of God” the wife of Governor Ortega said. Rev. Fr. Froilan Saluta served as the recollection master. Reflections focused on “Forgiveness” and the “Humanity of Forgiving”.

In line with the Sanitation Infrastructure Assistance under the “Sanitasyon Para Kadatayo Amin Program” of the Province of La Union, Gov. Manuel C. Ortega approved on March 24, 2009 the initial procurement of toilet bowls for indigent households.

In conformity with the Objective I of the Urban Environmental Management and the Millennium Development Goal (MDG), this project aims in reducing the number of people without access to safe water and sanitation. The total project costs PhP 770,000 and funding came from the “Health in Every Home Fund” and “Clean and Green Fund” as counterpart of the province for the Integrated Support for Sustainable Urban Environment (ISSUE2) Program. All in all, 1,000 sit type Porcelain Pail Pour Flushed Water-Sealed toilet Bowls and 100 sit type porcelain Urine Diversion (UD) toilet Bowls will be procured

In its bid to instill responsible and accurate information dissemination among its stakeholders, the Bureau of Animal Industry led by its Officer-In-Charge, Dr. Davunio P. Catbagan, held a two-day seminar and strategy planning workshop entitled “Integrated Risk and Crises Communication: Maintaining the Integrity of Livestock and Public Health” at the Center for Continuing Education, University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) last March 26-27.

In his welcome remarks, Dr. Victor C. Atienza, BAI Assistant Director and Head of the National Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Task Force, congratulated all participants for their respective offices’ contribution for making the Philippines FMD-free for the last three years and three months. He however stressed the importance for the country to be formally declared FMD-free by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) otherwise known as the World Organization for Animal Health. To accomplish the task, all zones located in Luzon shall maintain an FMD-free status even without the use of vaccination and that all hogs will be allowed to enter any of the three existing zones in the island.
